The Providence City Council in Rhode Island is poised to vote on Ordinance 45610, which would bar the city's "board of investment commissioners and/or finance director" from investing in Israeli government bonds. This is part of a wave of anti-Israel legislation in local governments, promoted by the global Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign. BDS seeks to end Israel's existence.
Its local leadership, "Jewish" Voice for Peace (jvp_ri) and the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), led the radical takeovers of Brown and RISD, is openly Marxist and revolutionary, and is influential on the Providence City Council.
If they succeed in passing this ordinance, they will be emboldened in 2025 to try to overturn RI's anti-BDS law in the General Assembly, H-7736.
